How to Read Movie Ratings: What Scores and Vote Counts Tell You

What does a movie rating really mean? Learn how TMDB scores and vote counts work, and how to compare titles fairly before you press play.

A rating looks simple: one number out of ten. But the same number can mean very different things depending on how many people voted and who they were. Here is how to read the scores on MyFlixer, which come from the TMDB community, so you can choose with more confidence.

What the score means

The rating on each title is the average of votes given by TMDB community members, on a scale from 0 to 10. A 7.0 means the typical voter liked it, and an 8.0 or higher means viewers were strongly positive.

Ratings appear on every poster and title page.

Why the vote count matters

An average from thousands of voters is steadier than an average from a few dozen. Compare Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall, which holds 9.1 out of 10 from 462 votes with Whalefall, rated 7.6 from only 20 votes. The first score has been tested by a huge audience, while a score from a small group can swing with a few extra votes. Data checked on October 16, 2026.

On MyFlixer the vote count is always shown next to the score on title pages and in our lists, so you can weigh both.

Compare like with like

  • Same genre. Comedies, documentaries and horror films are rated by different audiences and tend to score differently.
  • Similar vote counts. A fair comparison needs a similar number of voters on each side.
  • Your own taste. A 7.2 in a genre you love can beat a 8.5 in one you do not.

Rating is not popularity

Popularity and trending charts show how much attention a title is getting now, not how good it is. A new release can top the trending chart with a middling score, and a classic can have a great score and little current buzz. Use trending to see what people are talking about, and ratings to judge quality.

Use the filters to find what fits

On the movies and series pages you can sort by popularity, rating or release date, and narrow the list by genre. Try sorting a genre by top rated, then open a title to read its synopsis, watch the trailer and see the cast before you commit.
